The 1st win of the year

The reds sqaud delivered our first win of the new year with a good result against the visiting Trinidadian Allstars during a training practice match last night. After conceding a goal in the 1st 30 seconds we adapted to their pace and overcame them with a well organized approach that saw us keep a clean sheet in the 2nd half. The game was more hard fought than many a sunday game and we played some good football against a competitive team. Particular mention must go out to Ilije, Bola, Steve Morse, Ugo and Tokes for a great game. Thanks again to Jason for a great job as ref.

Score: CPR Reds 3 – 2 Trinidad Nationals

Goals: Bola, Mike S, Sewards

Stal Mielec 4 – 2 CPR Reds
March 26, 2007, 8:48 am

On a great spring day, surrounded by architecture in homage to eastern europe, we started our spring campaign with a hard fought defeat to league leaders Stal Mielec.

The game got off to the worst possible start when we gave away a corner from the kick-off, following confusion at the back. Stal put us under pressure as we attempted to gel following a long break, new players and positions. Following another couple of corners, we gave away, Stal scored after an error from a call on a cross. We fought back well and started to see the midfield get some passing going. Mike S had to be subbed after he realised he was playing with the sneakers he bought when he was 12 years old (worn down to the soles) and Ilije came on. Rob Chilton, having a great game as holding midfielder, fought well for the ball in the final third and the ball fell kindly to Ilije, who scored a corker of a goal in the top far corner. 1 – 1 was the score and it rightfully reflected the run of play and possession. We continued to put ourselves under pressure by giving away stupid fouls on the edge of the 18 yard box, 4 in total for the 1st half, and an incredible 7 corners! Stal scored off one of the free kicks from the left following a near post run we didn’t attack well enough.

We changed around the 2nd half and moved to a 3-5-2.We dominated much of the possession for most of the 2nd half, if a little scrappy, but failed to take advantage. While match sharpness was problem from the start, fatigue, cramp and tiredness played a big impact on the 2nd half. Stal changed to 1 up front after 15 minutes but their midfield was much better at supporting their center-forward and they scored after their right midfielder wasn’t pressured and he drifted a cross into the top left corner. 3-1 the score. Jan and Nikle partnered well on a free-kick and nikle was unlucky not to score following a great save from Stal’s keeper (How different the game might have been had this chance been taken). Stal then scored their 4th after a delay for a throw-in saw us lose concentration and a right-sided run wasn’t closed down, a cross across the face of goal and back post finish. 4-1. We fought back following composed possession in the middle by UK Matt with a pass to Mike S who megged the out-coming keeper. We fought hard for the final 10 minutes and the ref commented to me after the game that it was a good match-up and said the score flattered Stal.

We have ourselves to blame for sloppy mistakes and we’ll be making more changes to the team next week as there is no longer any room for ‘niceties’. Changes to be made for the persuit of results. A quick look at the table shows why 3 points are the only option against Kandia.

A reasonable showing back at Central Bar saw many of us hear some great stories of fellow reds shenanigans (worth hearing!) and learn more about Jan’s agregious parking fines.

4-5-13.jpg
Notes to formation:

We’ll be starting with a 4-5-1, designed to keep possession and starve our strong opposition of midfield space and momentum. Rob, as starting holding midfielder will, sit in front of our back 2. Starting defensive players have been chosen to counter the pace Stal Maliec showed during our 5-1 defeat and we have options to move around people based on the pace of the game and scoreline. Adi will start as the ‘drogba’, needing to hold the ball, inviting midfielders to push up and support him (more on individual player responsibilities on sunday). UK Matt and Ryan, as starting wide midfielders, will need to create width and push forward, as this formation clogs the center areas. A good choice of subs, depending on hangovers and illness, will allow us to change it up as neccessary. Ideally, we’ll be sucking the life out of them for 70 minutes then push forward for a winner in the final 20.

Players making a guest appearance for the 8’s – Ernesto, Brendan, Nick & Ugo

Players unavailable: Ben, Gonzo, Steve R, Eduardo, Steve T, Tokes, Rich, Le Matt, Big T

Players unknown: Christian, Bola, Charlie
